Carwood Motor Units Ltd was established in August 1966 and has grown steadily since then both organically and by strategic acquisition. The Company's areas of expertise are electrical, electronic, diesel fuel injection, heavy plant and climate control systems for all types of vehicles, ranging from passenger cars to cable cars, from trucks to trains, from earth movers to people carriers and from battle tanks to buses.
Today we have over 180 employees, with a large proportion of highly skilled technical staff. In an industry where knowledge and experience are highly valued, we are proud that many members of staff, currently 27, have been with the Company for more than 20 years.
The Company Head Office in Binley, Coventry U.K., employs more than 110 staff and is the principle technical operations centre and specialised parts distribution point for home and export sales. Our Birmingham facility has approximately 50 employees and operates primarily for the remanufacture of diesel fuel injection (DFI) equipment, it also provides a full vehicle diagnostic service.
Our associate companies overseas are based in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Dalian China. Besides providing support for Carwood Motor Units Ltd in sales, logistics and administration, they market, stock, and provide distribution and services for a diverse and complimentary range of products for the local Chinese and Asian market, successfully targeting the large shipyards as their prime customers.
Carwood Motor Units Ltd also has sales and distribution facilities based in Singapore for both the local market and neighbouring countries.
Our German operations commenced business in September 2007 and are based in Bielefeld. The operation provides warehouse logistics and distribution primarily to support our DRS customers in Germany; consideration is being given for the expansion of this facility into other product areas.
Products & Services
The company’s expertise and principle activities are in specialised technical services for automotive, PSV, rail, plant and military applications as well as speciality manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on remanufacturing and refurbishment. Products include diesel and petrol injection, rotating electric’s, turbo chargers, generators, electronics, auto electrical, lighting towers, air conditioning, heating systems and electronic air braking systems. Additionally, we provide a full sales, service and parts facility for plant and construction equipment.
In February 2007 a new diesel injection, (pumps and injectors) high-volume remanufacturing facility was opened in Coventry, remanufacturing conventional diesel pumps and injectors, as well as the latest technology of high-pressure common rail systems. This new facility houses the latest diesel injector and pump calibration equipment, providing significant additional capacity to the same industry leading standards as our Birmingham operation.
Carwood also work very closely with the major O.E. component makers in their chosen product areas, providing sales, distribution, service and warranty for both O.E. fit and aftermarket sales. This is primarily for users, dealers and trade customers operating and servicing trucks, buses, coaches, heavy plant, off-highway, rail and passenger cars.
Special Products & Services Division
SPS customers include low volume and bespoke vehicle and body builders, civil engineers, rail, engine and vehicle manufacturers, municipal authorities, and defence organisations including the UK MoD. SPS are recognised as experts in providing solutions to parts obsolescence. All export customers including defence are cared for through SPS and supported by our overseas offices and representatives.
A new remanufacturing facility for rotating electric's and turbochargers was opened in Ollerton Nottinghamshire in September 2008 to provide additional capacity.
We acquired the LSUK electrical rewind business in Yeovil, Somerset in November 2008. This has been renamed Carwood Rewind and provides a very good fit with the rest of the company's electrical business, giving quality control over all of the remanufacturing process. Additionally it will allow us to grow sales in other industry sectors outside of automotive.
To support our UK Defence Customers a new satellite warehouse and logistics facility was opened in Warminster, Wiltshire, in November 2008. During 2009 additional new satellites will be opened in Colchester, Catterick and Donnington. These will provide our customers with ex stock lead times on a wide range of parts and components and allow them to reduce their own inventory levels.
